He was awarded the &#8216;m\u00e9daille d&#8217;or&#8217; and &#8216;prix de perfectionnement&#8217; in organ and organ improvisation, the &#8216;m\u00e9daille d&#8217;or&#8217; in harmony, the &#8216;m\u00e9daille d&#8217;argent&#8217; in musical analysis, and the &#8216;prix d&#8217;honneur&#8217; for all his studies.<br \/>\nHis work as a jazz man has led him to play in various concerts and accompany many French musicians.<br \/>\nIn 1986 he founded the &#8220;Choeur Artie Shaw&#8221; (jazz vocal big-band), in which he also plays piano, composes and arranges.<br \/>\nHe is also a member of the &#8220;Chez Barbaro&#8221; quartet (saxophone, guitar, drums and Hammond organ).<br \/>\nCharles Balayer also teaches classical organ, organ improvisation and jazz at the Conservatoire de Musique et Danse de Brive, the first national music school in France to set up a Hammond organ class.
