class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Today, efforts are underway to preserve and promote the Save Gorges, while allowing for responsible visitor access. <\/strong><br\/><strong>Part of the site has been open to pedestrians and cyclists since safety improvements were completed.<\/strong> <br\/><strong>When it comes to its heritage, a distinction must be made<\/strong> <strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-indented is-style-indented--1 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prehistoric heritage<\/strong> :<br\/> The caves and rock shelters in the gorges were inhabited as early as the Paleolithic period. It was in this area, in the Grotte des Rideaux (Cave of the Curtains), that the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museedelhomme.fr\/fr\/venus-de-lespugue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Venus of Lespugue<\/strong><\/a> , one of the most important works of prehistoric art, was discovered. The entire group of prehistoric caves and rock shelters has been listed as a historical monument since 1972. (Site not open to the public)   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-indented is-style-indented--2 wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/><strong>Historical Heritage<\/strong>: <br\/>Nearby are the ruins of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/destination-commingespyrenees.com\/en\/not-to-be-missed-%e2%99%a5\/the-gallo-roman-villa-of-montmaurin\/\">Gallo-Roman villa at Montmaurin<\/a><\/strong>, evidence of the Roman occupation of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-indented is-style-indented--3 wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/><strong>Natural Heritage<\/strong>:  <br\/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.data.gouv.fr\/datasets\/ens-inventaire-de-la-faune-gorges-de-la-save-et-vallee-de-la-seygouade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The gorges are classified as a ZNIEFF <\/strong><\/a>(Natural Area of Ecological, Faunistic, and Floristic Interest). They are home to remarkable biodiversity, featuring cliffs, caves, oak and beech forests, as well as protected species of birds, bats, and orchids.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-indented is-style-indented--4 wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/><strong>Geological Heritage<\/strong>: <br\/>The Save River has carved a gorge nearly 2.5 km long through the limestone of the Pyrenean foothills, creating a spectacular landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons has-base-background-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/destination-commingespyrenees.com\/en\/sustainable-tourism\/best-practices-in-nature\/\">Best Practices for Nature<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ideas for a Day Trip to the Gorges de la Save and the Surrounding Area<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No matter the season, this corner of Comminges has everything you need for a wonderful time!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>On weekdays, why not start your day at the Boulogne-sur-Gesse market on Wednesday mornings! Bring a cooler if it\u2019s hot\u2014with local farmers at the market, you can stock up on delicious regional specialties for a picnic, then hit the trail for an easy, shaded 2-hour hike to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/rando.coeurcoteaux-comminges.fr\/trek\/8873-Sentier-de-l-Arboretum---foret-de-Cardeilhac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Cardeilhac Forest and its arboretum<\/a>. A lovely walk in a beautiful setting that will whet your appetite for lunch\u2014whether you eat right there or head to the Gorges de la Save, about a 10-minute drive away.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you arrive at the Gorges, find a spot by the water for lunch\u2014if you&#8217;ve chosen that option\u2014and\/or for a post-meal nap to rest and recover.  <br\/>We resume the exercise by taking a walk along the designated trail, admiring the unique scenery, the coolness, and the serenity of the place&#8230; we take our time!<br\/>Then we\u2019ll add one last highlight to the day by following in the footsteps of the Romans, heading to Montmaurin (about a 10-minute drive)\u2014the Gallo-Roman villa and the archaeological museum have a story to tell you.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternative: You can take the <a href=\"https:\/\/rando.coeurcoteaux-comminges.fr\/trek\/7498-Montmaurin-Sur-les-traces-des-Romains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Montmaurin: In the Footsteps of the Romans&#8221;<\/a> hike<strong> <\/strong>, which is a hilly loop<strong> <\/strong>that will take you to famous historic sites: the Gallo-Roman villa in Montmaurin and the village of Lespugue; further on, a road winds along the Gorges de la Save.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other weekday markets about 30 minutes from
