The Comminges-Barousse-Pyrénées Regional Nature Park

Under discussion since the late 90s, major progress took place between 2015 and 2026, representing nearly 11 years of studies and actions with all stakeholders involved to finally reach its creation. This is the time it took given the scale of such a project.

Creation of a common charter

A charter comprising 3 main operational axes highlights the PNR’s assets for our territory.

  • Collectively building the future of a desirable and ambitious rural life
  • Making ecological and energy transitions a catalyst for local and solidarity-based development
  • Making biodiversity and natural heritage riches a unifying foundation for the region

The Comminges-Barousse-Pyrénées Regional Nature Park

PNR Comminges-Barousse-Pyrénées covers approximately 170,000 hectares, 195 municipalities, five inter-municipal communities, two departments, and of course our Occitanie region.

Unlike a national park, the PNR does not impose strict rules
it is a label and a territorial project based on the commitment of local stakeholders.
It is rich in strong biodiversity, with very diverse natural environments (forests, mountains, alpine pastures, rivers, and wetlands…) and exceptional wildlife including the brown bear, golden eagle, and western capercaillie…
Comminges will gain in attractiveness without losing its rural identity. It will have better tourism visibility, guaranteeing the enhancement of landscapes and heritage as well as the protection of local traditions.
The municipalities within the park strengthen their territorial cohesion.
For residents, this leads to an improved quality of life, a protected living environment, and increased attractiveness resulting in the arrival of new residents and new local projects adapted to the population’s needs.

A few highlights of the PNR

  • territorial enhancement
  • local economic development
  • environmental protection
  • Sustainable tourism development
  • Revitalization of municipalities

New - The Tastes & Flavors Guide

While eating well without breaking the bank is a major concern for our fellow citizens, short supply chains are thriving in Comminges. Now more than ever, there has been a growing need for a guide that lists producers, restaurateurs, and food professionals who sell their creations directly to consumers and work with local products in an ethical manner.

From Farm to Table with Complete Transparency: The Charter

The Charter of Commitment was developed by and for professionals in partnership with the Comminges-Pyrénées Tourism Office. It highlights producers from all fields and chefs who work according to best practices, promote Comminges products, and share their respective expertise.

The guide “Goûts et Saveurs en Comminges” is not just a directory of businesses. It is much more than that. As you turn the pages, you’ll also find recipes, profiles, and interviews.
