VALCABRERE

About
Partially listed as a Historic Monument.
The gateway has been listed as a Historic Monument since 9 November 1926
In the shadow of the famous Saint-Just church in Valcabrère, the village cemetery stands as a remarkable testament to the medieval heritage of the Comminges region. Its main attraction is its 13th-century Romanesque gateway, which has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1926. A true work of sculpted art, this gateway marks the entrance to the cemetery and serves as a reminder of the spiritual and historical significance of this village, situated on the ancient routes to Santiago de Compostela.
Built in the 13th century, the gateway displays architecture characteristic of Pyrenean Romanesque art, with its carefully cut stones and sculpted decorations. It bears witness to the skill of medieval builders and the prosperity enjoyed by Valcabrère thanks to its proximity to the ancient city of Lugdunum Convenarum, now Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges.
Beyond its architectural interest, the cemetery offers a peaceful place for a stroll. Its exceptional setting, at the heart of a major heritage site comprising the Church of Saint-Just and the neighbouring ancient ruins, invites visitors to discover several centuries of history within a preserved natural environment. A visit allows you to appreciate the site’s peaceful atmosphere whilst admiring one of the village’s oldest heritage features.
