An exceptional testament to nearly sixteen centuries of history, the walls of the upper town of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges still surround one of the most beautiful heritage villages in the Pyrenees. Built in late antiquity, between the 4th and 5th centuries, it once protected the upper town of the ancient Lugdunum Convenarum, an important Gallo-Roman city situated at the crossroads of the trade routes between Gaul and the Iberian Peninsula.

Built against a backdrop of invasions and instability within the Roman Empire, this imposing wall was designed to defend the inhabitants and the city’s main administrative and religious buildings. Stretching for nearly 900 metres, it enclosed a vast fortified area occupying the summit of the hill. Its ramparts, punctuated by gates and towers, constituted a particularly effective defensive system for the time.

Over the centuries, the enclosure has witnessed the city’s major transformations. Following the decline of the ancient city, it remained a defining feature during the medieval revival of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, centred on its bishopric and cathedral. The ramparts were then maintained, reinforced and sometimes rebuilt to meet the town’s defensive needs. They helped protect this episcopal city, which became an important religious centre and a popular stop on the routes to Santiago de Compostela.

Today, the remains of the walls offer a remarkable insight into the site’s urban and military history. As they wander through the narrow streets of the upper town, visitors discover numerous sections of wall integrated into the landscape and the village’s architecture. These ancient stones tell the story of a region occupied since antiquity and provide a better understanding of the strategic and religious importance of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges through the ages.

Combined with the majestic Sainte-Marie Cathedral and the town’s rich archaeological heritage, the walls contribute to the unique character of this exceptional site. Today, it is an essential part of any visit to Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, where history, architecture and Pyrenean landscapes come together in a remarkable setting.
