This phenomenon is due to the presence of minerals deposited by underground water. As the water evaporates, it leaves a thin coloured layer on the surface, giving the rock its distinctive appearance. This formation attracts the eye because of the contrast it offers with the surrounding vegetation. It is an original landmark for hikers, and a testament to the geological wealth of the Pyrenees. This rock is the result of a slow geochemical process linked to erosion and the circulation of water in the subsoil.
