About

Louis de Monnard – 1938

Located in the Barcugnas neighbourhood.

The statue of the Lioness stands at the centre of a fountain, situated at the junction of Avenue de Toulouse, Avenue Maréchal Foch and the road leading to the Col de Peyresourde. The statue stands on a plinth, from which it overlooks a pedestrian walkway running between the two circular basins. The lioness, with her well-defined musculature, is depicted standing, suckling her two cubs.

The sculpture is the work of Louis de Monnard (1873–1939), who signed his name on the plinth. It was purchased by the State in 1938 and allocated to the town of Luchon in 1949. It was subsequently, in 1995 – according to aerial photographs from the IGN – placed at the centre of a fountain, at the junction of several major roads in the town.
