About
Gaston Petit – 1954
The sculpture is the work of Gaston Petit (1890–1984) and was created to pay tribute to the Luchon-born sculptor Jean-Marie Mengue, who created many of the works of art that adorn the town.
The project was initiated by the sculptor’s friends in Paris, who undertook the funding. The Luchon local council, for its part, provided the white marble plinth, supplied by the Lavigne marble works in Saint-Béat.
The bust is cast in bronze with a black patina. It rests on a long, square pedestal, the front of which is adorned with a frame bearing an inscription dedicated to the honouree, carved in relief.
