Saint-Pierre Church, a Romanesque church dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, listed in August 1975.
Overlooking the village of Mayrègne, Saint-Pierre Church is a remarkable example of Pyrenean Romanesque architecture. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, it is one of the key features of the Oueil Valley’s historical heritage. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1 August 1975, it retains all the authenticity of the small mountain churches of the Comminges region.
The building features a layout characteristic of Pyrenean Romanesque churches: a rectangular nave extended by a semi-circular apse, accompanied by a square bell tower to the west. Its façades are adorned with large arcades and reused carved stones from ancient Gallo-Roman remains, bearing witness to the valley’s early settlement.
Inside, the nave is covered by a barrel vault spanning several bays, whilst the apse features a semi-circular vault, offering a fine example of the simplicity and harmony of rural Romanesque art.
The church is surrounded by its old cemetery, where a monumental cross stands, also listed as a Historic Monument. This heritage site contributes to the charm and identity of this small mountain village, nestled in the heart of the Haut-Garonne Pyrenees.
