This church, restored in the 19th century, is one of the finest examples of the "early Southern Romanesque" style in the Comminges region.

Nestled in the charming village of Église Saint-Aventin, a few kilometres from Luchon, the Church of Saint-Aventin is regarded as one of the most remarkable Romanesque buildings in the Pyrenees. Built in the 12th century on the site of an older place of worship, it bears witness to the religious and historical importance of the Larboust Valley.

Its architecture is distinguished by an elegant silhouette dominated by two square bell towers, a remarkable carved portal and an apse characteristic of Pyrenean Romanesque art. Inside, visitors discover a rich heritage comprising carved capitals, ancient murals and numerous decorative elements that illustrate the religious fervour of the Middle Ages.

The church is dedicated to Saint Aventin, an 8th-century hermit particularly venerated in the region. According to tradition, he is said to have evangelised the surrounding valleys before suffering martyrdom. His tomb, preserved within the building, made this site an important centre of pilgrimage for several centuries.

Listed as a Historic Monument in 1840, among the first protected monuments in France, the Church of Saint-Aventin is today an exceptional example of Romanesque art in the mountains. Its state of preservation, the richness of its decoration and its stunning natural setting make it an unmissable stop for lovers of heritage, history and architecture.

Over the centuries, the building has undergone several restoration campaigns which have preserved its authentic character whilst showcasing its artistic treasures.
