In the footsteps of Nicolaï Greschny: a discovery trail
To mark European Heritage Days, set off to explore the works of Nicolaï Greschny on a trail linking several iconic sites in the Comminges region. A wonderful opportunity to explore the region, admire monumental Byzantine-inspired frescoes and discover the architectural heritage of each village.
In Miramont-de-Comminges, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows is Nicolaï Greschny’s first major work in the Comminges region. Entirely dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, it houses monumental frescoes painted in 1949, which are among the artist’s most remarkable works in the region.
In Saint-Plancard, the Chapel of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes houses precious 11th-century Romanesque frescoes, an exceptional example of medieval painting in Comminges. Nearby, the baptistery of Saint-Pancrace Church is adorned with frescoes by Nicolaï Greschny, depicting, in particular, the Creation and the Baptism of Christ.
In the Saint-Jean de Ponlat Chapel, the choir, entirely painted by the artist, depicts the life of Saint John the Baptist in a setting with Byzantine influences, characterised by luminous colours and great spiritual intensity.
In Encausse-les-Thermes, the spa refreshment pavilion houses rare secular frescoes by Nicolaï Greschny, offering a unique insight into his talent beyond religious art. The church’s baptismal font is also decorated by the artist. A guided tour will be offered at the end of the day.
This tour can be followed at your own pace throughout the day. Why not take the opportunity to explore the villages, their churches and chapels, and the rich historical and cultural heritage of the Comminges region?
