About
The Comminges Studies Society is delighted to invite you to attend its next lecture, given by Jean-Marc Chaduc!
In 2025, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Bernard Sarrieu, an eminent linguist and lover of the Gascon language, particularly the Commingeois dialects to which he dedicated his life. The Julien Sacaze Academy in Luchon organised a ‘Pyrenean week’ in his honour, and the Comminges Studies Society, of which he was a member, wished to provide an account of this event here. Bernard Sarrieu, a teacher in Montauban, was a passionate participant in the Felibrige movement, initiated by Mistral to revive the Occitan languages. He founded the Escolo deras Pireneos, the Comminges branch of the movement. As founder of the journal *Era bouts dera mountanho*, he produced a substantial body of work and, until his death, was a driving force behind the Occitan movement in our region. We shall look back on his life and work, placing them within the rich historical context of the era’s efforts to promote the languages of the Midi.
Jean-Marc Chaduc, a member of the Société des Études du Comminges, served as president of the Académie Julien Sacaze. An honorary General Engineer of Telecommunications, he is the author of numerous articles and a book devoted to the Barousse, his adopted valley.
Lecture organised in partnership with the Saint-Gaudens branch of the Haute-Garonne Departmental Archives
