SAINT-BERTRAND-DE-COMMINGES

About
Listed as a Historic Monument.
The Cabirole Gate is one of the entrances to the medieval town of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges. Forming part of the ancient ramparts, it played a role in the defence and control of access to the upper town.
In the Middle Ages, the original gate provided access to the upper town. It was probably fitted with a drawbridge at that time. A tower overlooking the sheer cliff face stood opposite it, on the site of the barbican that was later built using recycled medieval materials.
The gate was rebuilt in the 18th century using ancient reused materials. A Roman she-wolf is depicted on a carved stone. The lintel features several sculptures, as well as an inscription in honour of Tiberius. The site is likely that of the bishop’s palace.
The covered passageway above the gate connects two old houses.
