About
Commemorative stele for Second World War escapees from France.
The history of the Hospice de France is marked by significant events.
During the Second World War, thousands of men, women and children crossed the Pyrenean passes on foot to Spain, fleeing occupied France and Nazism. This stele, erected in 2009, is a tribute to all these people.
Previously, during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the Hospice de France played a crucial role as a place of refuge for many Spaniards fleeing the war and Franco's dictatorship. Another stele, inaugurated in 2016, stands nearby in their honour.
